PITTSBURGH, PA -- A month ago when we posted the Scout.com pre-evaluation top 100, I was asked multiple times why I liked Toney Clemons so much. Now, as we begin to enter the evaluation period the rest of the country will begin to learn why Toney Clemons should be considered as one of the best wide receivers in the nation and a likely five-star candidate.

On Saturday, at the Scout.com All-American Combine in Pittsburgh, Pa., Toney Clemons of Valley High in New Kensington, Pa., walked away with the MVP honors. The 6-2.5, 185 pound, wide receiver showcased his amazing athletic ability for all too see. Clemons didn’t have to test, he would still get his share of offers, but that’s not his nature.

“The combine was a great one to be at because of the set up and the competition they brought in,” Clemons said. “It’s a good camp to go to if you want to see how you measure up with the best athletes.”

Clemons was elated to learn that he had been chosen as the combine MVP, edging out Greensburg, Pa., standout Nick Sukay.

“It’s an honor to be named MVP because there were a lot of great competitors at the camp that could have won MVP just as easy.”

Gateway head coach Terry Smith was quite the wide receiver back in his day when he played at Penn State. Smith coached the wide receivers at the Scout.com combine on Saturday and got a first hand look at Clemons.

“I say with out a doubt he was the best one there,” Smith said. “Nick Sukay is very good, but Clemons just has so much talent. He is still raw in different aspects of his game like route running, but that can be coached. What he has you can’t coach.”

The Scout.com combine team votes on the MVP, along with the high school coaches who work the combines. An MVP will be picked after each combine throughout the spring.
