Smith Earns MVP

DURHAM, N.C. -- Having a good day at a combine takes determination, concentration, and a little luck. Normally, you want to start in one of the smaller events such as the broad jump or short shuttle and work your way up to the main event - the forty yard dash.

Jay Smith, a wide receiver out of Kempsville High in Virginia Beach, Virginia, received no such luck. He was in the first group on Sunday to run the forty. So instead of waiting around, he was the first person up in the group and pulled off a startling 4.47 second time, which turned out to be one of the best on the cold day.

It was also a sign of what was to come for the Scout.com Durham Combine MVP.

"I thought that I did a good job. I tried to go out there and do my best, I guess that’s what I did," Smith said. "From an athlete’s point of view, you have to have some confidence. Yea, I feel like that, but just went out there and do what I was taught."

Smith obviously was taught well as 6-foot-1.5, 187 pound receiver ran a 4.59 shuttle, 7.50 L-Cone, jumped 32 inches in the vertical jump, and 8-10 in the standing broad jump.

He also shined in the one-on-one drills, as quarterbacks battled to have him as their target all day. Cornerbacks tried to step up, but after Smith made a quick move, there was always separation when the ball arrived.

The offers are rolling in quickly for Smith and he plans to take several unofficial visits over the next week. However, for now he is very happy by being named the Scout.com MVP for the Durham Combine.
